Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 45 and 30 is 90

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 90
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 45 × 2 = 90,
    30/45 = 30 × 2/45 × 2 = 60/90
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 30 × 3 = 90,
    80/30 = 80 × 3/30 × 3 = 240/90
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 60/90 < 240/90 or 30/45 < 80/30
