Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 60 and 16 is 240

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 240
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 60 × 4 = 240,
    30/60 = 30 × 4/60 × 4 = 120/240
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 15 = 240,
    40/16 = 40 × 15/16 × 15 = 600/240
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 120/240 < 600/240 or 30/60 < 40/16
