Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 70 and 90 is 630

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 630
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 70 × 9 = 630,
    30/70 = 30 × 9/70 × 9 = 270/630
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 90 × 7 = 630,
    50/90 = 50 × 7/90 × 7 = 350/630
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 270/630 < 350/630 or 30/70 < 50/90
