Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 90 and 16 is 720
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 90 × 8 = 720,
    30/90 = 30 × 8/90 × 8 = 240/720
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 45 = 720,
    14/16 = 14 × 45/16 × 45 = 630/720
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 240/720 < 630/720 or 30/90 < 14/16
