Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 56 and 36 is 504

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 504
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 56 × 9 = 504,
    35/56 = 35 × 9/56 × 9 = 315/504
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 36 × 14 = 504,
    15/36 = 15 × 14/36 × 14 = 210/504
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 315/504 > 210/504 or 35/56 > 15/36
