Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 40 and 25 is 200
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 40 × 5 = 200,
    36/40 = 36 × 5/40 × 5 = 180/200
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 25 × 8 = 200,
    15/25 = 15 × 8/25 × 8 = 120/200
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 180/200 > 120/200 or 36/40 > 15/25
