Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 60 and 80 is 240

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 240
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 60 × 4 = 240,
    36/60 = 36 × 4/60 × 4 = 144/240
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 80 × 3 = 240,
    60/80 = 60 × 3/80 × 3 = 180/240
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 144/240 < 180/240 or 36/60 < 60/80
