Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 15 and 20 is 60
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 15 × 4 = 60,
    4/15 = 4 × 4/15 × 4 = 16/60
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 20 × 3 = 60,
    9/20 = 9 × 3/20 × 3 = 27/60
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 16/60 < 27/60 or 4/15 < 9/20
