Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 42 is 210
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 7 = 210,
    4/30 = 4 × 7/30 × 7 = 28/210
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 42 × 5 = 210,
    6/42 = 6 × 5/42 × 5 = 30/210
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 28/210 < 30/210 or 4/30 < 6/42
