Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 50 is 150

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 150
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 5 = 150,
    4/30 = 4 × 5/30 × 5 = 20/150
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 50 × 3 = 150,
    90/50 = 90 × 3/50 × 3 = 270/150
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 20/150 < 270/150 or 4/30 < 90/50
