Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 7 and 8 is 56
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 7 × 8 = 56,
    4/7 = 4 × 8/7 × 8 = 32/56
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 7 = 56,
    12/8 = 12 × 7/8 × 7 = 84/56
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 32/56 < 84/56 or 4/7 < 12/8
