Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 72 and 30 is 360
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 72 × 5 = 360,
    4/72 = 4 × 5/72 × 5 = 20/360
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 30 × 12 = 360,
    14/30 = 14 × 12/30 × 12 = 168/360
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 20/360 < 168/360 or 4/72 < 14/30
