Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 12 and 90 is 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 12 × 15 = 180,
    40/12 = 40 × 15/12 × 15 = 600/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 90 × 2 = 180,
    60/90 = 60 × 2/90 × 2 = 120/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 600/180 > 120/180 or 40/12 > 60/90
