Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 16 and 3 is 48
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 16 × 3 = 48,
    42/16 = 42 × 3/16 × 3 = 126/48
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 3 × 16 = 48,
    14/3 = 14 × 16/3 × 16 = 224/48
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 126/48 < 224/48 or 42/16 < 14/3
