Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 28 and 3 is 84
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 28 × 3 = 84,
    42/28 = 42 × 3/28 × 3 = 126/84
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 3 × 28 = 84,
    14/3 = 14 × 28/3 × 28 = 392/84
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 126/84 < 392/84 or 42/28 < 14/3
