Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 14 and 6 is 42
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 14 × 3 = 42,
    49/14 = 49 × 3/14 × 3 = 147/42
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 7 = 42,
    20/6 = 20 × 7/6 × 7 = 140/42
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 147/42 > 140/42 or 49/14 > 20/6
