Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 5 is 15
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 5 = 15,
    49/3 = 49 × 5/3 × 5 = 245/15
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 5 × 3 = 15,
    4/5 = 4 × 3/5 × 3 = 12/15
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 245/15 > 12/15 or 49/3 > 4/5
