Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 15 and 18 is 90

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 90
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 15 × 6 = 90,
    5/15 = 5 × 6/15 × 6 = 30/90
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 18 × 5 = 90,
    40/18 = 40 × 5/18 × 5 = 200/90
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/90 < 200/90 or 5/15 < 40/18
