Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 18 is 36

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 36
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 9 = 36,
    5/4 = 5 × 9/4 × 9 = 45/36
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 18 × 2 = 36,
    7/18 = 7 × 2/18 × 2 = 14/36
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 45/36 > 14/36 or 5/4 > 7/18
