Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 7 and 56 is 56

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 56
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 7 × 8 = 56,
    5/7 = 5 × 8/7 × 8 = 40/56
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 56 × 1 = 56,
    10/56 = 10 × 1/56 × 1 = 10/56
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 40/56 > 10/56 or 5/7 > 10/56
