Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 16 is 48
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 16 = 48,
    50/3 = 50 × 16/3 × 16 = 800/48
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 3 = 48,
    10/16 = 10 × 3/16 × 3 = 30/48
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 800/48 > 30/48 or 50/3 > 10/16
