Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 30 and 6 is 30

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 30
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 30 × 1 = 30,
    50/30 = 50 × 1/30 × 1 = 50/30
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 5 = 30,
    40/6 = 40 × 5/6 × 5 = 200/30
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 50/30 < 200/30 or 50/30 < 40/6
