Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 60 and 16 is 240

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 240

    50/60 = 50 × 4/60 × 4 = 200/240
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 15 = 240,
    28/16 = 28 × 15/16 × 15 = 420/240
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 200/240 < 420/240 or 50/60 < 28/16
