Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 98 and 10 is 490

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 490
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 98 × 5 = 490,
    56/98 = 56 × 5/98 × 5 = 280/490
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 10 × 49 = 490,
    2/10 = 2 × 49/10 × 49 = 98/490
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 280/490 > 98/490 or 56/98 > 2/10
