Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 10 and 42 is 210
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 10 × 21 = 210,
    6/10 = 6 × 21/10 × 21 = 126/210
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 42 × 5 = 210,
    30/42 = 30 × 5/42 × 5 = 150/210
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 126/210 < 150/210 or 6/10 < 30/42
