Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 10 and 4 is 20

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 20
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 10 × 2 = 20,
    6/10 = 6 × 2/10 × 2 = 12/20
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 4 × 5 = 20,
    50/4 = 50 × 5/4 × 5 = 250/20
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 12/20 < 250/20 or 6/10 < 50/4
