Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 15 and 80 is 240

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 240
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 15 × 16 = 240,
    6/15 = 6 × 16/15 × 16 = 96/240
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 80 × 3 = 240,
    56/80 = 56 × 3/80 × 3 = 168/240
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 96/240 < 168/240 or 6/15 < 56/80
