Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 16 and 10 is 80

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 80
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 16 × 5 = 80,
    6/16 = 6 × 5/16 × 5 = 30/80
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 10 × 8 = 80,
    14/10 = 14 × 8/10 × 8 = 112/80
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/80 < 112/80 or 6/16 < 14/10
