Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 18 and 5 is 90

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 90
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 18 × 5 = 90,
    6/18 = 6 × 5/18 × 5 = 30/90
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 5 × 18 = 90,
    3/5 = 3 × 18/5 × 18 = 54/90
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/90 < 54/90 or 6/18 < 3/5
