Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 20 and 90 is 180

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 20 × 9 = 180,
    6/20 = 6 × 9/20 × 9 = 54/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 90 × 2 = 180,
    30/90 = 30 × 2/90 × 2 = 60/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 54/180 < 60/180 or 6/20 < 30/90
