Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 45 and 20 is 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 45 × 4 = 180,
    6/45 = 6 × 4/45 × 4 = 24/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 20 × 9 = 180,
    56/20 = 56 × 9/20 × 9 = 504/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 24/180 < 504/180 or 6/45 < 56/20
