Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 56 and 27 is 1512

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 1512
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 56 × 27 = 1512,
    6/56 = 6 × 27/56 × 27 = 162/1512
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 27 × 56 = 1512,
    4/27 = 4 × 56/27 × 56 = 224/1512
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 162/1512 < 224/1512 or 6/56 < 4/27
