Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 7 and 20 is 140

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 140
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 7 × 20 = 140,
    6/7 = 6 × 20/7 × 20 = 120/140
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 20 × 7 = 140,
    9/20 = 9 × 7/20 × 7 = 63/140
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 120/140 > 63/140 or 6/7 > 9/20
