Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 9 and 20 is 180

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 180
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 9 × 20 = 180,
    6/9 = 6 × 20/9 × 20 = 120/180
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 20 × 9 = 180,
    15/20 = 15 × 9/20 × 9 = 135/180
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 120/180 < 135/180 or 6/9 < 15/20
