Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 9 and 6 is 18

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 18
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 9 × 2 = 18,
    6/9 = 6 × 2/9 × 2 = 12/18
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 3 = 18,
    50/6 = 50 × 3/6 × 3 = 150/18
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 12/18 < 150/18 or 6/9 < 50/6
