Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 90 and 50 is 450

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 450
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 90 × 5 = 450,
    6/90 = 6 × 5/90 × 5 = 30/450
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 50 × 9 = 450,
    4/50 = 4 × 9/50 × 9 = 36/450
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/450 < 36/450 or 6/90 < 4/50
