Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 90 and 27 is 270

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 270
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 90 × 3 = 270,
    6/90 = 6 × 3/90 × 3 = 18/270
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 27 × 10 = 270,
    5/27 = 5 × 10/27 × 10 = 50/270
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 18/270 < 50/270 or 6/90 < 5/27
