Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 20 and 35 is 140

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 140
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 20 × 7 = 140,
    8/20 = 8 × 7/20 × 7 = 56/140
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 35 × 4 = 140,
    1/35 = 1 × 4/35 × 4 = 4/140
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 56/140 > 4/140 or 8/20 > 1/35
