Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 60 and 8 is 120

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 120
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 60 × 2 = 120,
    8/60 = 8 × 2/60 × 2 = 16/120
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 15 = 120,
    1/8 = 1 × 15/8 × 15 = 15/120
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 16/120 > 15/120 or 8/60 > 1/8
