How to solve 20x + 5 = 24x - 1? Get the answer and stepwise instruction to solve linear equation in one variable 𝒙.
We have 20x + 5 = 24x - 1
First, we move the x terms to the LHS and constant terms to the RHS of the equation, inverting the sign on the terms. This is also called transposing method.
Transposition is a faster method and combines the following two steps, were we to solve the equation by:
i) Subtracting 5 from both sides
ii) Subtracting 24x from both sides
Therefore, 20x - 24x = -1 - 5
or, -4x = -6
Next, divide both sides by -4, which is the coefficent of x
Note: if a = b, then a ÷ c = b ÷ c-4x-4 = -6-4
x = -6-4
To simplify, divide both numerator and denominator by 2, which is the GCF of 6 and 4:
x = -3-2 or, x = 1.5
